Maria Bäck is a Swedish-Danish director and screenwriter.
As a small kid she started writing diaries, a habit that led her into poetry, dance, journalism, photography, psychology, and, later, filmmaking.
Maria was born in Göteborg and moved to London in her early twenties to continue her dance practice. She later moved to Copenhagen and graduated from The National Film School of Denmark in 2013 with Mother is God, which won Nordic Talents Award the same year.
I Remember When I Die, her feature length debut as a documentary director, was in competition at CPH:DOX and Psychosis in Stockholm marked her debut as a fiction director/writer, earning critical acclaim and nominations for five Guldbagge awards.
Brave New Love premiered in Locarno, main competition, 2026, nominated for the Golden Leopard award.
She is currently developing her fourth feature film while expanding Brave New Love into a novel.
